Skin Care: What Dirty Secrets Are Lurking Behind This Profitable Industry?

Everyone Wants to Lead Healthier Lives

Today, more and more people are taking an interest in leading a healthier lifestyle. For most, this usually means eating healthier and exercising. While those things are certainly crucial aspects of good health, they are also not the only ones. In fact, there are many things that people do everyday that can have horrible effects on their bodies.

What Is Really Safe?

Cleaning products and cosmetics only make up a small part of what most consider to be safe. It becomes especially dangerous when people have been told all of their lives that something is good for them, when in reality, it is extremely harmful. This perfectly sums up the skin care industry today.

Go Natural Instead

Unfortunately, most skin care products are ridden with harmful ingredients like parabens, phthalates, and petrochemicals that often cause cancer and other diseases. Fortunately, there are healthy, natural skin care alternatives that work even better than traditional care products do.

Parabens are perhaps the most widely used toxin in the skin care industry. According to tests done by the United States Environmental Protection Agency, or EPA, parabens have displayed estrogenic activity. Sadly, estrogens have been known to stimulate breast cancer. While many women may believe that parabens are not as dangerous if they aren’t ingested orally, that is simply not true. In fact, they are absorbed through the pores 10 times as much as if they had been taken orally.

Like parabens, petrochemicals pose an equally dangerous threat. In past studies, rodents exposed to petrochemicals orally and topically died before the study could even be completed! In those studies, the rodents developed serious health conditions such as nerve damage, anemia, and brain damage. Yet, those so-called ‘safe’ toxic ingredients can be found in the cosmetic, food, and cleaning aisles of the typical grocery store.

Beware of Hidden Forms of Formaldehyde

Most consumers are smart enough to stay away from formaldehyde, but not surprisingly, expert marketers are smarter. They know that products with formaldehyde listed as an ingredient are not at all attractive to consumers, so they have learned to disguise it. The following ingredients release formaldehyde: DMDM hydantoin, diazolidinyl urea, and 2-bromo-2-nitropropane-1. Beware of these hidden carcinogens!

There Are Alternatives

When learning about all of the nasty ingredients lurking in skin care products, it can be tempting to want to neglect skin care altogether. It can definitely be overwhelming to hear all at once, but luckily, there are easier natural alternatives that can replace traditional ones. Most of them are less expensive, and they are actually healthy!

Real Skin Care

There are many wonderful natural skin care options, but the key is to select products in the most natural form possible. Lemon, baking soda, coconut oil, apple cider vinegar, avocado, and essential oils are all excellent natural choices. When applying these on a regular basis, they should be applied in the same order that traditional products are applied: cleanser, toner, moisturizer, and SPF. It is the ingredients that make the real difference.
